Juicy, well-spiced chicken meatballs with notes of Middle Eastern cooking.
They are packed with feta, chopped pine nuts, chilli, parsley and spices – perfect as part of a tapas spread, served with flatbread and a good dip, tucked into pitta bread or similar.
And on top of that, they are very easy to make.
Chicken meatballs in the oven
You can cook the chicken meatballs in the oven – it is wonderfully easy and they look after themselves. Turn them once along the way if you like.
If you have an air fryer, you can cook them in that too – and shorten the cooking time at the same time. Chicken meatballs cooked in an air fryer take no more than about 12 minutes, depending on size of course.
Last but not least, you can fry the chicken meatballs in a pan – this does mean keeping a closer eye on them than if you cook them in the air fryer or oven.
Spiced chicken meatballs
Ingredients
- 500 g minced chicken
- 50 g feta
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, grated or crushed
- 1 handful parsley, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp pine nuts, roughly chopped
- 2 tbsp dried breadcrumbs
- 1/2 fresh chilli, finely chopped (deseeded) – taste it first
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp salt
- freshly ground black pepper
- oil, for shaping the meatballs
Method
- Mix the minced chicken and salt together thoroughly – ideally with a hand mixer.
- Add the remaining ingredients – onion, garlic, parsley, crumbled feta, spices, pine nuts, egg and breadcrumbs.Add the finely chopped chilli too, but always taste it first. It may be very hot, so you only need 1/4, or it may need a little more.
- Season with pepper and mix the mince thoroughly again.
- Shape the mince into meatballs – I made mine about 35 g each.Dip a tablespoon in a little oil, then shape the meatballs in your hand with the help of the spoon. This gives the meatballs a coating of oil, which gives a lovely browned finish in the oven – and they are also much easier to handle.Place the meatballs on a baking tray lined with baking paper as you go.
- Cook the spiced chicken meatballs in a preheated conventional oven (top and bottom heat) at 200°C for about 18-22 minutes. Turn them once along the way if you like – and always check that they are cooked through. You can also cook them in an air fryer – about 12 minutes at 190°C – shaking the basket once or twice along the way. The chicken meatballs can of course also be fried in a pan.
- Serve them with flatbread and a good dip, in pitta bread, with a good salad or similar.
