Marzipan Christmas trees – an easy Christmas cake ready in 10 minutes.
Here is the easiest Christmas cake I know.
It is the kind of cake that practically makes itself, and it is brilliant for unexpected guests, a cosy afternoon with the children or simply a sweet treat with coffee in December.
All you need is a shop-bought marzipan cake base – depending on where you buy it, it may be called marzipan cake, mazarin cake or mazarin tart (a Danish almond cake with a chocolate top). Cut it into 8 pieces, and with a little trick (a warm, dried knife) you get the neatest cuts without the chocolate cracking.
Then it is just a matter of decorating with icing – you can cover the whole surface or, as I have done here, pipe a little garland for a simpler look. Scatter over sprinkles, chocolate balls, stars, hearts – whatever you have in the cupboard.
As the finishing touch, I give each piece a little trunk made from a shortened salted pretzel stick – and they look like the prettiest little Christmas trees.
It is simple, festive and lovely to make with children. If you have the time and energy, you can of course bake the cake yourself – I have linked to my easy marzipan cake, which tastes heavenly and is also quite quick to make. Find my mazarin cake recipe here.
Mazarin Christmas Trees – Easy Marzipan Christmas Cake
Ingredients
- 1 shop-bought mazarin tart (Danish marzipan cake with a chocolate top)
- 4 salted pretzel sticks, preferably thick
- 2 tbsp thick icing
- Small chocolate balls, hearts or stars and/or gold flakes
Method
- Cut the cake into 8 equal pieces. I warm the knife blade with a little boiling water, wipe it dry and then cut the cake – that way the chocolate does not crack.
- Break the pretzel sticks into shorter pieces and push one piece into each Christmas tree, so it looks like a trunk.
- Mix a thick icing – you only need a very small amount. If you like, stir a pinch of edible glitter into the icing, then spoon it into a piping bag.
- Now pipe the trees. You may want to start with half of them so the icing does not set before you decorate, and decorate the Christmas trees with small chocolate balls, hearts, stars or whatever you prefer.
- Serve the easiest cake there is – one the children will love decorating too – and merry Christmas.
