Crisp chicken nuggets with homemade tartare sauce.
Crispy chicken cooked in the air fryer – incredibly easy and simply delicious.
Cooking nuggets in the air fryer is a healthier way to get them crisp than dropping them into a deep-fat fryer. They have plenty of flavour and crunch, and the chicken stays juicy.
You can easily leave the parmesan out of the coating, but if you like parmesan, do try it – it adds a great depth of flavour.
Serve them with a portion of chips, a crisp fresh salad or similar.
If you would rather cook the chicken in the oven or in a frying pan, read the method in the introduction here – click here.
Crispy chicken with tartare sauce – honestly, it tastes fantastic.
The tartare sauce has a texture similar to Danish remoulade – lovely body and plenty of flavour.
If you want a lighter version, you can swap 100–150 ml of the mayonnaise for crème fraîche. I often do that myself when I serve it as a dip. If my tartare sauce is going into a burger, though, I make it with mayonnaise only.
Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets with Tartare Sauce
Ingredients
Air fryer nuggets
- 600 g chicken mini fillets
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp sweet paprika
- Salt and pepper
- 250 ml panko breadcrumbs
- 50 g parmesan, finely grated (optional)
- Cooking oil spray
Tartare sauce
- 250 ml mayonnaise
- 4-5 tbsp fresh herbs – I use dill, chives and parsley
- 2 pickled gherkins, finely chopped (a little over 50 ml)
- 1 tbsp capers, finely chopped
- 1-2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper
Method
Homemade tartare sauce
- Mix all the ingredients for the tartare sauce and season to taste with salt and pepper.*If you would like a lighter tartare sauce, you can easily replace 100 ml of the mayonnaise with 100 ml crème fraîche. It makes the sauce less rich and adds a little more acidity.
- Keep the tartare sauce in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Air fryer nuggets
- Mix the panko breadcrumbs and parmesan and set aside.
- Whisk the egg, oil and spices together well, and season with salt and pepper.
- Turn the chicken thoroughly in the egg mixture, then coat the pieces in the breadcrumb mixture.
- Place the chicken in the air fryer in a single layer and spray the tops with cooking oil spray.
- Cook for about 12 minutes at 200°C on the air fryer setting.*Check the pieces after 6-8 minutes – in some air fryers the pieces need turning to crisp up on both sides. Remember to spray the newly exposed side with cooking oil spray if you turn them.
- Season the chicken with a little salt after cooking and serve with the tartare sauce.
