Start the day the best way with a bowl of overnight oats with cocoa and orange.
These overnight oats are full of flavour and keep you full for hours – perfect for both breakfast and lunch. The combination of rich cocoa and fresh orange, using both the juice and the zest, gives the oats a lovely balance and tastes almost like a bite of creamy orange chocolate.
Overnight oats are an easy, practical solution for busy mornings. Make them the evening before and leave them to soak in the fridge overnight – then they are ready to take with you or enjoy at home. This cocoa and orange version is both filling and delicious, and it will quickly become a favourite in your morning routine.
You can also serve the cocoa oats in smaller portions as a snack between meals. The flavour is so rich that it is almost like a dessert – so you could also use it as a healthier pudding with less sugar and more fibre.
About overnight oats and Danish fridge porridge
In Denmark we call overnight oats køleskabsgrød – literally ‘fridge porridge’ – and they are a wonderful way to prepare a healthy, filling breakfast. The basic idea is simple: oats are mixed with milk, yogurt or a plant-based alternative and left to soak in the fridge overnight. That gives the oats a soft, creamy consistency with no need to cook them.
The best thing about overnight oats is that they can be varied endlessly. You can add anything from fresh berries, nuts and seeds to spices such as cinnamon or vanilla. This cocoa and orange version is a delicious twist, but the possibilities are almost endless.

Overnight oats with cocoa and orange
Ingredients
- 250 ml jumbo oats coarse rolled oats
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp vanilla sugar
- 200 ml milk
- 100 ml Greek yogurt, skyr or similar
- 1/2 large orange, juice and finely grated zest
- 2 tbsp maple syrup, honey or similar
- 1 pinch salt
To serve
- 2-4 tbsp Greek yogurt, skyr or similar
- Chocolate shavings or chopped chocolate (optional)
Method
- Put all the ingredients in a bowl and stir well to combine.
- Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 2-3 hours – but preferably overnight. You can also mix the ingredients directly in 2 serving glasses with lids. Leave enough room for the topping the next day – that way the oats are easy to take with you, or to grab from the fridge in the morning or for a quick lunch.
- Before serving, give the oats a good stir, and adjust the consistency if needed with a little more milk, yogurt or orange juice.Taste, and add more orange zest if you like.
- Divide the cocoa oats between 2 serving glasses and top with a couple of tablespoons of yogurt or skyr and, if you like, a few chocolate shavings or some chopped chocolate.
Tips for overnight oats
- Overnight oats keep for 4-5 days in the fridge – make sure all the ingredients are fresh.I prefer to make enough for 1-2 days at a time. It takes no time to stir together, and that way I can vary what goes in.
- I recommend using jumbo oats, as they give the oats a really pleasing consistency and texture. To my taste, finer rolled porridge oats can turn a little mushy, but that is of course a matter of preference.
Prøvet, også den med kanel og de er begge godkendt herhjemme:-)
