Atmosphere and setting
Vores Skotterup sits in the old inn building at Strandvejen 232 in Snekkersten, a short drive from Helsingør and right on the Øresund. The building dates from the 1800s, and that history is still part of the place. Oliver has developed the restaurant, the interior and the kitchen over the years, and by his own account the wine selection is a central part of the concept.
It is a restaurant that works in different ways depending on the season. In summer the location is wonderful, with the view over the water and a cosy courtyard if you would rather sit somewhere a little more sheltered.
In autumn it is the atmosphere indoors that does it. The room is cosy and elegant without ever becoming stiff or formal, with laid wooden tables, candlelight and mullioned windows. We think Oliver has found a really fine balance between the classic inn feel and a more modern expression, and it works equally well as a couple, with friends or with the family.
The four-course menu
We chose the kitchen's four-course menu for two (990 kr.), which is built from several smaller servings rather than a traditional starter and main. It is a concept we really like. You get to taste more of the kitchen's ideas, and it suits the kind of seasonal food Vores Skotterup serves, where the menu changes with the year.
The first course was pan-fried langoustine tails with carrot, langoustine sauce, preserved lemon, almonds and thyme. We are big fans of langoustine, and this is exactly the kind of dish we order when we see it on a menu. Sweetness, acidity and something nutty around the shellfish, and the thyme gave it an aromatic edge.
Next came a risotto with braised beef, Parmigiano, spinach and cheese sauce (a 20 kr. supplement on the bill). A richer, more classic serving that suits the autumn, and a nice change of direction after the langoustine. That is precisely the point of eating this way. You get different flavours and textures through the meal.
The yakitori-grilled pigeon breast with mushrooms, figs, popcorn purée, sherry sauce and kale was the big dish of the evening. Pigeon has more character than chicken, and together with the mushrooms, the figs and the sherry sauce it felt just right for the season. The popcorn purée is an unusual detail, and it was the purée and the sauce that made the dish for us. It was beautifully plated too. And it was the dish we kept coming back to when we talked about the evening afterwards.
The fourth course was a waffle with Danish ham, mushrooms, apple jelly, fermented garlic and autumn truffle. Not the combination you first imagine when you think of a waffle, but here it was a savoury serving, where the ham, the mushrooms and the truffle pulled it in a classic, autumnal direction, and the apple jelly added something fruity. It is the kind of dish that shows the kitchen likes to play a little, and it is good to see there is room for that on the menu.
The desserts
We finished with dessert, of course. One was built around apple with vanilla and caramel sauce, which is about as autumnal as a dessert can get, and the vanilla ties it all together.
Alberte had the raspberry dessert with white chocolate and rosehip, which appears on the bill as Himdbær (125 kr.). The acidity of the raspberry against the sweet white chocolate, with a floral note from the rosehip, is a somewhat different combination. We like a dessert menu that has both the classic flavours and something a little more unexpected.
Wine and drinks
We started with two glasses of crémant (190 kr.) and moved on to a bottle of Bourgogne Aligoté 2023 from Jean-Claude Bachelet (700 kr.), followed by a couple of glasses of wine (220 kr.). We also had filtered water at 25 kr. per person.
We love wine, so the wine list matters to us, and it is something we have noticed over many visits here. With a menu that ranges from shellfish to richer meat dishes, it is a real advantage to have a selection where you can find something to suit each course.
The children
We often visit restaurants with Alberte and Olivia, so how a place handles children matters to us. Vores Skotterup is not a traditional family restaurant, and it does not need to be. We actually like taking the children to places where a little more care has gone into the food.
The children had bolognese (two portions, 290 kr.), a children's ice cream (85 kr.) and two soft drinks (90 kr.). We also talked through the other options for them, including a fish dish and a special lemonade, so there is enough flexibility for both children and adults to have a good evening.
Professional, relaxed service
The staff are one of the things we have appreciated here over the years. They are good at talking about the food and the wine, and it never becomes formal or stiff.
In our experience, the best evenings at a restaurant happen when the service is professional but at the same time relaxed and personal. That is the balance here, and it is one of the reasons we keep coming back.
Price and standard
The bill came to 2.760 kr. in total for two adults and two children. That covered the four-course menu for two, the supplement for the risotto, two glasses of crémant, the bottle of Aligoté from Bachelet, two glasses of wine, the raspberry dessert, filtered water, two bolognese, a children's ice cream and two soft drinks. Taking the children's food out, that works out at roughly 1.100 kr. per adult including wine.
Because the kitchen works with smaller servings, you can decide for yourself how big an evening you want. Some evenings you want the long dinner with several courses and wine, other evenings just a couple of good dishes, and that flexibility is a real strength.
Was there anything that did not quite land? No. It was really good, and we find the standard rises with every visit. (Not sponsored)
Vores Skotterup is without doubt one of our local favourites. The location is wonderful, the room is cosy, and Oliver has raised both the interior and the kitchen year after year, with skilled staff and a wine list that deserves your attention. We will certainly be back, whether as a couple, with friends or with the children, and we are already looking forward to the next visit.
