Overnight oats with cinnamon and orange are a lovely combination, perfect for breakfast or a quick snack. The warm flavour of cinnamon pairs beautifully with the fresh, slightly tart orange, giving this recipe both depth and freshness.
The recipe could not be easier – stir it together in the evening and it is ready to enjoy when you wake up. Add a little honey or syrup for extra sweetness, and top with a spoonful of yoghurt, fresh orange and perhaps some granola or nuts for crunch.
Overnight oats are not only delicious but also wholesome and filling. They are the perfect choice when you want a breakfast that tastes great and gets the day off to a good start.
About overnight oats (køleskabsgrød)
Overnight oats – known in Denmark as køleskabsgrød, literally ‘fridge porridge’ – are an easy and delicious way to prepare a healthy, filling breakfast. The basic idea is simple: rolled oats are mixed with milk, yoghurt or a plant-based alternative and left to soak overnight in the fridge. The result is a creamy, soft porridge that is ready to eat straight away – no cooking required.
The great thing about overnight oats is that they can be varied in endless ways. This version with cinnamon and orange is a lovely combination, where the warm flavour of cinnamon meets the fresh tartness of orange – perfect for bringing both cosiness and freshness to your breakfast.
Try them with berries, nuts, seeds or other spices such as cardamom or vanilla to find your own favourite.

Overnight oats with cinnamon and orange
Ingredients
- 250 ml jumbo rolled oats
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla sugar
- 200 ml milk
- 100 ml Greek yoghurt, skyr or similar
- 1/2 large orange, juice and finely grated zest
- 2 tbsp maple syrup, honey or similar
- 1 pinch salt
To serve
- Greek yoghurt, skyr or similar
- Orange segments
- Granola or something else crunchy, optional
Method
- Put all the ingredients in a bowl and stir well to combine.
- Cover with a lid and chill for at least 2-3 hours – but preferably overnight. You can also mix the ingredients in 2 serving glasses with lids. Leave enough room for the toppings the next day, and you have a breakfast that is easy to take on the go, or simply a glass to grab in the morning or for a quick lunch.
- Before serving, give the oats a good stir, and adjust the consistency with more milk, yoghurt or orange juice if needed.Taste and add more orange zest if you like.
- Divide the oats between 2 serving glasses and top with a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt or skyr, fresh orange segments and, if you like, a little granola, nuts or similar.
Tips for overnight oats
- Overnight oats keep for 4-5 days in the fridge – make sure all the ingredients are fresh. I prefer to make enough for 1-2 days at a time. It takes no time to stir together, and that way I can vary the flavours.
- I recommend using jumbo rolled oats, as they give the oats a really pleasing consistency and texture. To my taste, fine rolled oats can turn a little mushy, but that is of course a matter of preference.

Uden tvivl den bedste overnight oat vi har smagt til dato Vi lavede den mælkefri, da det passer bedst til os, og toppede den med appelsin og tørrede morbær. I morgen tilføjer vi en lille smule mørk chokolade
