The short answer is yes — for a country in Asia, the Maldives is actually quite expensive.
Food, drinks, sunscreen! Everything. So my strong advice is to book all inclusive — or at the very least check the hotel’s prices before you go.
A good, tangible example was their sunscreen. A sunscreen that costs around 50-60 DKK (Danish kroner) at home cost 200 DKK on the island.
A Red Bull cost 100 DKK in the minibar, and an ordinary small 25 cl soft drink cost 50 DKK — prices a long way from what we were used to from our trips to Thailand.
We also had to invest in UV rash vests (sun-protective tops) for the whole family; they cost about 700 DKK each.
I had read before leaving home that the Maldives is more expensive than other places in Asia, but I was still a little shocked And once you are on the island, there is no option other than buying there, so prices are possibly also pushed up a bit compared with the capital, Malé, where you have access to shops and so on.
On top of that, prices are presumably also higher because of the transport out to the islands, and because the islands cannot be self-sufficient given their relatively small land area.
So it is something to factor in when you are planning a trip to the Maldives.
