Crispy Chicken Cheese Burger – Homemade McChicken copycat with cheddar.
Say hello to your new favourite burger. This Crispy Chicken Cheese Burger with cheddar is everything a good burger should be: crisp, juicy, cheesy and full of flavour – and it is surprisingly easy to make at home.
The chicken gets its crunch from a golden coating, and the cheddar melts softly over the top, adding just that little extra that lifts the burger to another level. All of it tucked into a soft bun with a creamy mayo – comfort food through and through.
And you choose how you want to cook it:
- In the oven: Light, lower in fat and still pleasingly crisp – perfect for weeknights.
- In the air fryer: Fast and crisp with minimal effort – ideal for busy days.
- In a frying pan: Maximum crispness and juiciness – the ultimate burger crunch!
Whichever method you choose, you get a crispy chicken burger that comes very close to the fast-food favourite – only better, because you control the quality and how much cheese goes on.
Crispy Chicken Cheese Burger – McChicken Copycat with Cheddar
Ingredients
- 600 g minced chicken
- 100 ml plain flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 egg, beaten
- 150 g cornflakes, blitzed to crumbs
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Neutral-tasting oil or cooking spray
To serve
- 4 burger buns
- 6-8 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 4-8 slices cheddar
- Lettuce – I use a crisp variety such as iceberg
Method
- Divide the mince into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty sized to fit the burger buns. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper.
- Mix the plain flour with the spices, season with salt and freshly ground pepper and tip it into a shallow bowl. Put the blitzed cornflakes in a second bowl and the beaten egg in a third.
- Coat the chicken patties in the seasoned flour, then thoroughly in the beaten egg and finally in the cornflakes.
- Heat a generous glug of neutral-tasting oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken patties until golden and crisp on both sides and cooked through. You can also cook them in an air fryer at 190°C for about 18 minutes, or in a fan oven at 200°C for 18-22 minutes, depending on the thickness of the patties. Spray them lightly with cooking spray before they go into the air fryer or oven.
- Meanwhile, stir the mayonnaise together with the Dijon mustard, and warm the burger buns in the frying pan, the oven, a toaster or the air fryer.
- Spread the top and bottom halves of the buns with the mayonnaise. Lay the cheese on the bottom halves and set the hot chicken patties on top so the cheese melts. Add the lettuce, finish with the top halves and serve straight away.
