Classic guacamole – a Mexican avocado dip.
Guacamole is a classic Mexican avocado dip, loved all over the world – and with very good reason. It is creamy, fresh and really easy to make, and it goes with just about everything, from tacos and nachos to bowls, barbecues and Mexican dishes.
I make my guacamole the classic way with ripe avocados, fresh lime juice, a little ground cumin, a small pinch of cayenne pepper, and salt and freshly ground pepper. A simple combination that gives just the right balance of freshness, richness and heat.
You can either mash the avocados with a fork for a more rustic texture or blend them completely smooth and creamy – it depends a little on what you are serving it with.
If the guacamole is being served alongside a salsa, it is worth stirring a spoonful of the salsa straight in. It adds extra flavour and a little more body. You can also add finely chopped onion, tomato or coriander if you prefer a chunkier version.
It is the kind of recipe that is easy to adapt to taste and occasion – but made the classic way, it already tastes wonderful.
Guacamole recipe: how to get a vibrant green guacamole
A little tip if you want an extra vibrant, intensely green guacamole. If the avocados are a little pale or dull in colour, I blend them with a good handful of fresh spinach.
You cannot taste the spinach, but it gives the guacamole a lovely bright green colour – and at the same time helps it stay fresh and green for longer. I keep the rest of the ingredients completely classic, so the flavour is still exactly as a good guacamole should be
Guacamole
Ingredients
- 3
ripe avocados
- 1-1 1/2 limes, juice of (adjust to taste)
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper
- 1-2 pinch ground cumin
- Salt and pepper
- Optional: a small garlic clove, finely grated
- Chopped coriander, if you like it
Method
- Halve the avocados and scoop out the flesh with a spoon.
- Mash it with a fork or blend it in a mini chopper together with the cumin and cayenne.
- Season to taste with lime juice, salt and pepper.
- Keep the guacamole covered, with an avocado stone in the middle, until serving. Be aware that the surface may discolour if it stands for too long, – it is easily scraped off with a spoon.

Hej Dianna
Hej Jessie
