Looking for a side dish that is a little different and works just as well for barbecue evenings as for classic oven dishes? Then try baked pointed cabbage with cream cheese and serrano ham – a simple yet completely irresistible combination of crispness, creaminess and plenty of flavour.
The pointed cabbage (also sold as sweetheart or hispi cabbage) is cut into wedges, spread with savoury spiced (pikant) or garlic cream cheese and wrapped in serrano ham before it goes into the oven. The result? Tender, flavourful cabbage wrapped in crisp serrano ham with a rich, creamy centre.
Perfect as a side for anything from grilled meat to oven-baked dishes, or as a light lunch with a crisp salad on the side.
Tips for the recipe
Make ahead: Can be prepared in advance and put in the oven just before serving. Not suitable for storing once cooked.
Alternative: Serrano ham can be replaced with Parma ham.
More flavour: Use spiced or garlic cream cheese for extra depth.
Serving: Perfect as a side dish, light lunch, starter or a green dish to go with the barbecue.
Baked pointed cabbage with cream cheese and serrano ham
Ingredients
- 1 pointed cabbage also sold as sweetheart or hispi cabbage
- 100 g cream cheese – savoury spiced (pikant) or garlic
- 8 slices serrano ham – or Parma ham
- Olive oil
- freshly ground pepper
- Chopped parsley
Method
- Cut the pointed cabbage into quarters and spread the cut surfaces with cream cheese.
- Wrap the serrano ham around the cut surfaces, tucking the ends underneath so the seams sit on the bottom.
- Place the pieces in an ovenproof dish, lined with baking parchment if you like. Drizzle a little olive oil over the ham and season with freshly ground pepper.
- Bake the cabbage in a preheated conventional oven (top and bottom heat) at 220°C for about 20-25 minutes.
- Drizzle with a little olive oil and scatter with parsley before serving.
