Atmosphere and setting
Restaurant 1923 sits inside Liseberg in Gothenburg, at Sofierogatan 5, so you need admission to the park to eat here. The name refers to the year Liseberg opened, and according to the restaurant itself it is the park's largest, with room for 500 guests inside and out. By its own description the grill takes centre stage, and Liseberg classes it as a steakhouse.
We often find it a little hard to track down proper restaurants in amusement parks. Many places are dominated by fast food and self-service, and we much prefer to be able to sit down and enjoy a meal in pleasant surroundings. So finding 1923 was a relief.
The restaurant was genuinely lovely, especially considering it is in the middle of an amusement park. Pink chairs, round sofa booths, fringed lamps and a patterned floor give the room a distinct 1920s feel. The atmosphere was nicely relaxed, and luckily there was a free table even though we hadn't booked.
What we ate
Jes had the Steak Minute Au poivre at 279 SEK: 160 g of thinly beaten sirloin with roasted pepper sauce and tomato salad, served with chips. The pepper steak was perfectly nice. Nothing that truly impressed, but it tasted good, and it was honest, uncomplicated food for a lunch in the middle of a day on the rides.
I chose the Burgare 1923 at 199 SEK, a 180 g grilled chuck and brisket burger with bacon, house dressing, lettuce, Roscoff onion and mature cheddar in a burger bun, with chips. The burger was good, and everything tasted perfectly decent.
Olivia had a children's burger, listed on the bill as Barn Hamburgare at 105 SEK. It was actually really good. It was made with a proper beef patty that had a lovely grilled flavour, and it was nice to see some care taken over the meat rather than just serving a standard kids' burger. Alberte simply had chips for lunch, an extra portion of Pommes 1923 at 39 SEK.
All in all the food was perfectly decent. It wasn't a great gastronomic experience, but that wasn't what we expected either. The menu also includes burrata with grilled autumn fruits at 149 SEK, halstrad röding (seared Arctic char) at 199 SEK and a 200 g entrecôte at 245 SEK, where you build your own dish with sides and sauce.
Wine and soft drinks
With the food we had two glasses of Pasqua Mucchietto e Ko at 212 SEK. The wine was fairly ordinary, fresh but also very neutral. Fine for the price, though. The children had two Coca Cola Zeros at 76 SEK.
Fantastic service
One thing that really made an impression on us was the service. The staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, helpful and professional. We felt genuinely well looked after, and with two children in tow it is always nice when things just run smoothly.
Price and level
We were two adults and two children, and the total bill came to 910 SEK for two main courses, a children's burger, a portion of chips, two glasses of wine and two soft drinks. With a tip we paid 1,001 SEK.
We think that was a fairly reasonable price for lunch for four at a restaurant in the middle of Liseberg. It was the service and the setting that lifted the experience. The food was decent, but nothing special. (Not sponsored)
Restaurant 1923 was a positive experience, not because the food was anything special, but because we got a really lovely setting where we could sit down and enjoy a relaxed lunch with the children. The service was absolutely fantastic and the surroundings cosy. If you visit Liseberg and want to eat at a proper restaurant rather than one of the park's many fast-food outlets, 1923 is definitely a good choice, and we would happily eat here again.
