A puff pastry plait filled with Mexican-spiced beef and plenty of melted cheese – a gooey taco pie.
An easy recipe for a puff pastry plait with taco beef, inspired by the classic Danish ham plait (skinkestang).
It is a great way to use up leftover Mexican-spiced meat from a meal earlier in the week. You need no more than 300-350 g, and it can be either beef or chicken.
The most important thing is that the meat is not too wet, or the pastry will turn soggy.
Serve your taco pie with a fresh, crisp salad and perhaps a little salsa, guacamole or crème fraîche. It is also a great addition to a buffet table.
Mexican puff pastry plait
Ingredients
- 1 roll ready-rolled puff pastry
- 80 g cheddar, grated
- 50 g grated mozzarella
- 1 egg, beaten, for brushing
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Beef filling
- You can use leftover Mexican-spiced meat (about 350 g)
- – or make a batch:
- 300 g minced beef
- 1/2 bell pepper, finely diced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp taco seasoning (just under one sachet)
- Salt and pepper
- Oil
Method
Beef filling
- Heat a splash of oil in a pan and fry the onion for a couple of minutes.
- Add the mince and brown it well, then add the diced bell pepper and the taco seasoning.
- Heat through for a couple of minutes, season to taste with salt and pepper, and let it cool slightly while you cut the pastry.
Mexican puff pastry plait
- Unroll the puff pastry on a sheet of baking parchment.
- The filling goes down the centre of the pastry, so cut diagonal strips in from each long edge until you reach 1/3 of the way into the sheet. Do this on both sides.See the photo just below the recipe for how to cut the pastry.
- Spread half the cheese over the uncut strip of pastry in the centre, then spoon the meat on top. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the top.
- Fold the ends of the pastry in over the filling, then fold the strips in over the filling, alternating from side to side, one at a time.See the video above the recipe if you need to.
- Brush the top with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds if you like.
- Bake the plait in a preheated conventional oven (top and bottom heat) at 200°C for about 20 minutes.
- Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.Serve with a fresh green salad, guacamole, salsa, crème fraîche or similar.
