Sangria – An easy recipe for the classic Spanish summer drink made with red wine.
Sangria is the essence of summer, sunshine and holiday spirit. An ice-cold jug filled with red wine, citrus fruit, apple and plenty of ice cubes – all that’s missing is a warm summer evening and the feeling of being on holiday in Spain.
Classic sangria comes from Spain and Portugal and exists in countless variations. What they typically have in common is wine, fresh fruit and something that adds sweetness and extra flavour. That is exactly what makes sangria such a lovely summer drink to make yourself – it can easily be adjusted to suit precisely the taste and strength you prefer.
I make my sangria with red wine, and I like to use a Pinot Noir. I find the lighter red wine works beautifully, because the sangria turns out fresh and thirst-quenching rather than heavy. I also add Cointreau, freshly squeezed orange juice and lemonade, which bring sweetness, freshness and a little fizz.
If you would like a less sweet sangria, you can easily swap the lemonade for sparkling water. In that case, adjust with a little sugar syrup at the end so you can control the sweetness yourself.
Sangria is also quite simply one of the easiest things to serve to guests. Pour everything into a large jug, add plenty of ice cubes and lots of sliced orange, lemon and apple, and give it a good stir. Serve the sangria ice cold in wine glasses with extra ice and a straw – Spanish summer in a glass.
A wonderfully simple, fresh and thirst-quenching summer drink that never gets too heavy or too strong – perfect for the terrace, a summer party or as a welcome drink on a hot summer’s day.
