Spicy Margarita – Frisk, syrlig og med et lækkert kick

Spicy Margarita

Spicy Margarita – fresh, fiery and full of flavour.
A cocktail I first tasted on a cruise out of Miami – and it has been my favourite ever since.

There is nothing like a really good margarita – and this spicy version is something special. Here you get the classic Mexican cocktail, but with a little extra kick from fresh jalapeños that play beautifully against the sharp lime and the sweetness of the sugar syrup. Tequila and Cointreau tie it all together in an intense but balanced cocktail that is refreshing, bright and just a little bit cheeky.

The recipe is easy to make, but the flavour depends a great deal on your jalapeños – they need to have some bite, or the cocktail loses its spicy edge. If you can’t find jalapeños with enough heat, another green chilli with a bit more punch works just as well. Just remember to taste as you go – that’s what makes it fun.

The margarita comes from Mexico and has roots going back to the 1930s. It quickly became popular across North America and is today one of the world’s most iconic cocktails. This is without doubt one of my own favourites – the perfect balance of sourness, sweetness and strength. Whether you want to impress your guests or simply treat yourself to something good, this is the way to go.

Method

  • Put the jalapeño slices in a shaker and crush them with a muddler.
It is important that the chilli is hot, so taste it and use a different green chilli if you have ended up with a very mild one.
  • Fill the shaker right up with ice cubes and pour in the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and sugar syrup. Close the shaker and shake the cocktail until the shaker is thoroughly chilled and a thin layer of frost forms on the outside – only then is your cocktail ready to serve.
  • Rub the rim of a glass with a little lime and dip it in salt or Tajín. Fill the glass with ice cubes and pour your Spicy Margarita over – through a strainer or sieve.
Garnish with lime and jalapeño before serving.
