Potato bake with spiced beef and feta

Greek-inspired potato bake with spiced beef and feta.

Potato bake with minced beef and feta is a satisfying, filling oven dish in which simple ingredients are turned into a dinner full of flavour. Tender slices of potato are layered with a spiced meat sauce inspired by Greek cooking, then topped with crumbled feta and a layer of mozzarella that gives the dish an extra creamy, golden topping.
Mozzarella has no place in Greek cooking, I know that – it is optional and can easily be left out. But it gives the gratin a really lovely finish – and I happened to have some left over 🙂

The minced beef is browned well before onion, red pepper, celery and garlic are added, and then it all simmers with cream, stock and plenty of warm spices. The combination of the rich meat sauce, tender potatoes and salty feta makes a truly delicious dish the whole family will love.

The dish is perfect if you have leftover boiled potatoes from the day before, and it also lends itself very well to being made ahead. You can easily assemble the bake in advance and cook it later, or reheat the leftovers the next day – if anything, it is almost better for it.

Serve the potato bake with a fresh green salad and a good dollop of cold crème fraîche, which goes beautifully with the spiced flavours. An easy, comforting weeknight dish that is just as happy on the table when guests are coming.

Method

  • Boil the potatoes in a pan of salted water for about 8-10 minutes – or until they are almost tender. Drain and leave to cool slightly.
  • Meanwhile, brown the meat well in a splash of oil in a frying pan.
  • Add the onion, red pepper, celery and garlic and fry until the onion is soft and translucent.
  • Sprinkle over the spices and stir in the tomato purée, season with salt and freshly ground pepper and heat through thoroughly.
  • Add the stock and cream and let the sauce simmer gently – while you slice the potatoes.
  • Grease an ovenproof dish with oil and arrange half the potato slices over the base in a tight layer. Top with half the meat sauce and half the feta, then repeat with a final layer of potatoes, meat sauce, feta and mozzarella.
  • Gently stir the top layer a little so the cheese mingles with the sauce, then bake in a preheated conventional oven (top and bottom heat) at 200°C for about 25 minutes.
  • Let the bake settle for 10 minutes before serving – and serve with a fresh green salad and ice-cold crème fraîche, if you like.

      Warm wishes, Dianna
