Hot honey halloumi bites – crisp, salty and spicy pieces of halloumi with sweetness and crunch.
This is halloumi taken to the next level – crisp, salty, sweet and with a little spicy twist… what’s not to love?
These hot honey halloumi bites are a game changer if you love the combination of crunch and flavour. I coat the pieces of halloumi in plain flour, egg and crushed cornflakes tossed with spices – then they go straight into the oven or air fryer for 10-14 minutes. Quick, easy and seriously good!
They are perfect as a snack with a glass of wine among friends, as part of a tapas spread, or as a topping on a fresh salad or in a wrap – the only limit is your imagination. And let me be honest… they taste so good that nobody stops until the dish is empty.
Serving suggestions:
- As a snack with a glass of chilled white wine or bubbles.
- On a tapas spread alongside olives, aioli, a hot salsa and small bread rolls.
- As a topping on a main-course salad with, for example, rocket, avocado and pickled red onion.
- In wraps with crisp lettuce, salsa or chilli mayo.
- In sliders or pitta bread with greens and a drizzle of hot honey.
Hot honey halloumi bites
Ingredients
Crispy halloumi
- 120 g cornflakes
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 2 blocks halloumi or grilling cheese, 200-250 g each
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 4 tbsp plain flour
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Cooking spray or oil
Hot honey
- 200 g runny honey
- 2 tbsp chilli flakes
- 1 tbsp apple cider or white wine vinegar
Method
Crispy halloumi
- Crush the cornflakes finely in a bag. Tip them into a bowl with the onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and mix together.
- Pat the halloumi dry with a little kitchen paper and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
- Turn the pieces in the plain flour, then in the beaten egg and finally in the crushed cornflakes.Once the pieces have been coated in flour, I take a thin skewer and carefully push it into the cheese cubes, one at a time, then dip each one thoroughly in the egg mixture and then in the cornflakes. That way I avoid getting my fingers caked in egg and cornflakes – and the coating stays on the cheese better.
- Spread the pieces out on a baking tray lined with baking paper and spray with a little cooking spray or drizzle over a little oil.
- Bake in a preheated fan oven at 200°C for 8-10 minutes. Turn them if needed and give them a further 3-4 minutes. Use the same method in an air fryer.Meanwhile, make your hot honey.
Hot honey
- Pour the honey into a small saucepan with the chilli flakes and warm it gently over a low heat. It should only just warm through, so the honey takes on the flavour of the chilli better.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar.
To serve
- Arrange the warm halloumi bites in a bowl and drizzle with hot honey. Don’t use it all – serve extra on the side for those who want it. Serve straight away as a snack or appetizer.
