Homemade gløgg with warm Christmas spices.
Christmas isn’t complete without the scent and taste of homemade gløgg – Danish mulled wine.
This recipe is built on a rich, aromatic gløgg extract packed with warm Christmas spices, blackcurrant cordial, orange and a generous blend of port and rum.
Together they create an intense depth of flavour that is perfect for spreading Christmas hygge through the whole house.
Over the years gløgg has become an essential part of a Danish Christmas, and with this recipe you can easily make a version that tastes of genuine tradition and love of the season.
The extract can be made well in advance, and the longer it is left to infuse, the more intense the flavour becomes.
Remove the orange slices after a couple of days so they don’t affect the extract, but leave the spices in – they keep developing the flavour into something quite special.
Gløgg extract – the essential base for homemade gløgg
The secret of a successful gløgg lies in the extract, and here the combination of warm Christmas spices and the sweet, tart notes of blackcurrant and orange is indispensable.
When the extract is blended with port and rum, you get an intense, complex flavour that lifts your gløgg and makes it unforgettable.
Keep the extract in the fridge and enjoy it throughout December – it keeps for at least a month, so you always have a base ready for cosy moments.
How to use the gløgg extract
When you’re making gløgg, this concentrated extract makes it easy to adjust the flavour.
Strain off the amount you need and leave the rest in the fridge with the spices, so the flavour continues to develop. For 6 people, combine 1 bottle of red wine with about 150 ml extract and heat gently to around 65°C – don’t let it boil, so the flavours are preserved.
Serve the gløgg with raisins and chopped almonds for the complete Christmas experience.
Homemade gløgg – the cosiest drink of Christmas
When you serve homemade gløgg, you invite the warmth of Christmas in. The deep flavour of the spices and the sweet notes of raisins and almonds make gløgg something quite special.
Add a little extra sugar if you prefer it sweeter, and enjoy a glass on a cosy December evening or with æbleskiver (Danish pancake balls), the perfect partner for gløgg.
The tradition behind gløgg – a taste of Christmas history
Gløgg has long been part of the Christmas tradition in Denmark and the other Nordic countries.
Hot spiced wines, which date back to the Middle Ages, have over time won a cherished place in our Christmas celebrations. Today gløgg is synonymous with hygge and enjoyment, often served at Christmas markets or at home with the family. The combination of hot gløgg and æbleskiver has become a classic that brings a smile to children and adults alike in the cold Christmas season.
