Logen in the morning
Logen is the red timber building at Ästad Vingård, and in the morning this is where the regular breakfast is served. We were there on Sunday morning between 9 and 10, and the room was buzzing – plenty of people were, like us, eating just before heading home. It was cosy and the mood was good, that particular Sunday feeling where everyone takes the last hour at an easy pace before the suitcase has to be packed.
The idea is that the morning shouldn't begin with queuing at a buffet. Instead, breakfast comes to the table in several servings, and you choose between a cold and a hot dish from a short menu. Coffee, tea and juice are included.
The food
Breakfast began with a shared serving of the day's bread from Dan Bakstudio with butter, cheese, jam and a little greenery – we added charcuterie with pickled vegetables, which the menu offers as an option. The yoghurt variation with strawberries and caramelised buckwheat granola was also on the table as the cold dish.
The hot dish was the standout for us – pork neck with scrambled eggs. On the menu it's called Creamy eggs and comes with farmhouse cheese, brown butter, baked pork and mustard seeds. My word, it was good. It really was a delicious breakfast.
To finish, a lovely sorbet arrived as dessert – a sweet little ending which the menu describes as a serving shared around the table. Sorbet for breakfast may sound a bit mad, but it worked ;-)
Service
The service was really good. Sunday morning was busy, so we had to wait a little between servings, but that's understandable when the whole hotel wants breakfast in the same hour. Everything was ordered and served at the table, and the tone was warm throughout.
Logen and ÄNG
We also had the gourmet breakfast at ÄNG during our stay, and the two experiences can't and shouldn't be compared. ÄNG is a standalone tasting-menu experience lasting an hour and a half – Logen is the classic breakfast, simply done properly and served at the table. Each shows a different side of Ästad, and we would definitely have breakfast at Logen again.
Breakfast at Logen was really delicious – a classic breakfast done with care and served at the table. The pork neck with scrambled eggs is the dish we remember best, and the cosy room full of Sunday guests made it a wonderful end to the stay. We would definitely have breakfast at Logen again next time we're at Ästad Vingård.
