On our trip to Miami we ate at a string of wonderful restaurants, and we enjoyed both the food and the professional service. Towards the end of our stay, however, it dawned on us that many of the places we had chosen were actually part of larger chains. Groups such as First Class Hospitality Group run several of the city’s most popular restaurants, and it shows – they know exactly how to impress their way to top scores on Google and TripAdvisor.
We ate at several of their restaurants, and there is no doubt they know what they are doing. The menus, though, were almost identical across their Italian, Mexican and Cuban venues, and it began to feel a little samey.
Our experience – only noticed at the end
We genuinely enjoyed the food and service at these restaurants, but it was only towards the end of our stay that we started to spot the repetition. The same pasta dishes, the same tacos and the same cocktails kept turning up – just in different surroundings.
That is by no means a bad thing if you only eat at one or two of the chain’s restaurants, because the quality is high. But if, like us, you love trying new things, it pays to look a little further for places with their own distinctive menus.
The chains’ strengths – professional and highly rated
One thing we quickly learned is how good the chains are at dominating online platforms like Google and TripAdvisor. When you search for a restaurant in Miami, it is often their venues that sit at the top, with glossy photos and high ratings. And there is a good reason for that – they deliver consistent quality and an experience thought through down to the smallest detail.
Tips for finding more varied experiences
If you want to avoid eating the same thing several times over, these tips can help:
- Check the menu online: Most restaurants publish their menus on their website, so you can steer clear of repeats.
- Explore the alternatives: Scroll further down the search results on Google and TripAdvisor – some of the little gems are often tucked away beneath the big chains.
- Step away from the tourist areas: Small, independent restaurants are often found a little way from spots like Ocean Drive.
- Ask the locals: Some of our best recommendations came from the hotel staff and people we met along the way.
Conclusion – chains or little gems?
With a little preparation you can have a fantastic food experience in Miami. The big chains offer consistency and top quality, but small, independent places often give a more unique and personal experience. For us it was about finding a balance – both have their charm.
