The Espresso Martini is an iconic coffee cocktail, known and loved the world over. It combines the intensity of espresso with the sweet depth of Kahlúa and the clean strength of vodka. It is an elegant drink that is wonderful as an after-dinner drink – and, with a little twinkle in the eye, you could also say it helps keep your energy up into the late evening hours.
The cocktail’s history goes back to the 1980s, when, according to legend, it was invented by the bartender Dick Bradsell in London. A customer asked for a drink that would both wake her up and satisfy the taste buds – and the Espresso Martini was born. On top of the drink you will traditionally find three coffee beans, said to symbolise health, wealth and happiness – a lovely little detail that also makes the serving look that bit more elegant.
In this version I have given the drink a creative twist by adding three drops of chocolate sauce on top. Using a toothpick, you can gently draw through the drops to create small, delicate hearts. It gives the drink a personal touch and looks stunning. You can also dust a little cocoa powder over the top for a more classic look.
Remember, the key to a perfect Espresso Martini is a good espresso. It carries the cocktail with its deep flavour and creates the beautiful layer of foam on top that is characteristic of this drink. If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, you can add a little sugar syrup to round off the flavour.
The Espresso Martini is a timeless favourite that brings together the best of two worlds – coffee and cocktails. So fire up the espresso machine and give this elegant classic a try.
Espresso Martini
Ingredients
- Ice cubes
- 6 cl espresso, cooled
- 6 cl vodka
- 6 cl Kahlúa (coffee liqueur)
- 1-2 cl sugar syrup (optional)*
- Coffee beans – or chocolate sauce, to garnish (optional)
Method
- Fill your shaker right to the top with ice.Depending on its size, you may find it easier to shake the cocktails in 2 batches.
- Pour all the ingredients into the shaker and shake hard until a fine layer of frost forms on the outside – only then is it cold enough.*Sugar syrup ties the flavours together, but naturally it also sweetens your cocktail – so leave it out if you are not keen on too much sweetness, or use just 1 cl.
- Pour the cocktail through a strainer to hold back the ice cubes, and serve it in a cocktail glass.
- Top with 3 coffee beans – or drip 3 drops of chocolate sauce on top and draw a toothpick through them to make 3 pretty hearts in a row.
