Jes has family over there, so we visit quite often – and it is simply so cosy. The island has its charm both in season and “out of season”. Through the summer and the other school holidays, Fanø is full of life. Tourists come from many places, and German visitors in particular are well represented on Fanø. Jes was born and raised on Fanø, and besides his parents (my parents-in-law), who still live there, Jes has plenty of other family who live or have lived on Fanø.
I know Sønderho best, as much of Jes’s family lives there. But we always visit Nordby too when we are there – it has a really charming pedestrian street with shops and restaurants.
The island is not big, but there is still plenty to do – for children and adults alike. Spend a day at Skov Legepladsen, the forest playground – or take a walk along the wide, wild beach. Fanø has wonderful, untamed nature, plenty of old bunkers and good chances of finding amber on the beach. Incidentally, you are allowed to drive on the beach; it is enormously wide and very long – and it really is a lovely way to get from one end of the island to the other.
In Sønderho you can shop at the local Daglig Brugsen supermarket, and there are also a couple of small local shops, the campsite and, not least, Ravsmeden (the amber smith) – who is my father-in-law 🙂
Restaurants on Fanø
På Fanø er der også masser af muligheder for lækre restaurant besøg, – og herhjemme er der flere favoritter. Herunder finder du et par anmeldelser af de restauranter vi senest har besøgt.

Take a trip to “æ Kåver”, the old sea mark, let the children run wild at Skov Legepladsen, the forest playground – or take a walk along the wide, wild beach.

Sights & culture
Sønderhodag
A fixed tradition held every year on the third Sunday in July.
The village is brimming with atmosphere, and there is a “bridal procession” through the streets, where many of the locals, their children and grandchildren are dressed in the old Fanø costumes.
Each costume has its own history, and the whole procession ends at Møllen, the windmill, where the dresses are shown off, with music and speeches.
Jes’s parents keep a firm family tradition where we all go back to theirs for lunch in the garden – and make a wonderful day of it.

We like to stay at Camping Klitten when we are there. We rent a cabin with a shower and toilet, and it is simply so cosy. There we can barbecue, relax and enjoy ourselves – and it only takes a few minutes to walk down to the village. The girls love it, and it has become something of a fixed tradition that this is where we stay.
