Crispy halloumi in the oven or air fryer – an easy, flavourful alternative to meat.
Crispy halloumi is a brilliant way to add both flavour and texture to your meals – and here is a very simple recipe that works in both the oven and the air fryer. The halloumi is coated in crushed cornflakes mixed with spices, which gives it a golden, crunchy crust while the centre stays soft and tender.
It is perfect when you want to cut down a little on meat but still have something filling and full of flavour on the plate. The halloumi works as a topping for salads, in wraps, in bowls or as a vegetarian alternative to meat in both weekday and weekend dishes. The bites also make a lovely snack or starter.
It can be ready in under 15 minutes and goes with almost anything – simple, versatile and delicious.
Deep-fried halloumi
You can of course also deep-fry the halloumi if you prefer. Fry the pieces in plenty of neutral-tasting oil in a frying pan, or cook them in a deep-fat fryer until golden and crisp.
Serving suggestions:
- As a topping for salads with, for example, pearl barley, grilled vegetables or fresh spinach
- In a vegetarian wrap with hummus, pickled red onion and rocket
- Served as a main course with oven-baked potatoes and a dip
- In a bowl with quinoa, avocado and tahini dressing
- As a filling for pitta bread with crisp salad and dressing
Crispy halloumi in the oven or air fryer
Ingredients
- 120 g cornflakes
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 2 blocks halloumi/grilling cheese, 200-250 g each
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 4 tbsp plain flour
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Cooking spray or oil
Method
- Crush the cornflakes finely in a bag and tip them into a bowl with the onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and mix well.
- Pat the halloumi dry with a little kitchen paper and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
- Turn the pieces in the plain flour, then in the beaten egg and finally in the crushed cornflakes.Once the pieces are coated in flour, I take a thin skewer and carefully push it into the cheese cubes, one at a time, then dip each one thoroughly in the egg mixture and then in the cornflakes. That way I avoid getting my fingers caked in egg and cornflakes – and the coating sticks to the cheese better.
- Arrange the pieces on a baking tray lined with baking parchment and spray lightly with cooking spray or drizzle over a little oil.
- Bake in a preheated fan oven at 200°C for 8-10 minutes. Turn them if needed and give them a further 3-4 minutes. Use the same method in the air fryer.
