Sun Siyam Iru Veli

Our family adventure in the Maldives was nothing short of magical, and our stay at Sun Siyam Iru Veli exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived until the final day, every experience was filled with unforgettable memories.

Arrival

Our journey began with an early-morning arrival at Malé airport, where we were welcomed into Sun Siyam’s private lounge in the seaplane terminal. The lounge offered a comfortable start to our adventure, with delicious refreshments, breakfast and all the facilities needed to make the wait a pleasant one. The view of the seaplanes lined up ready for departure was an exciting taste of the journey ahead.

The seaplane transfer

After a short wait we were called to board the seaplane, which is an experience in itself. It was hot before take-off, but the flight became part of the adventure, taking us straight to Iru Veli in around 45 minutes.

Arriving at Iru Veli

On arrival at Iru Veli we were met by the friendly staff on a floating platform, from where we were ferried across to the island. The personal communication with our host via WhatsApp made it easy to arrange everything from activities to restaurant bookings – a wonderful service.

The accommodation

Our stay at Sun Siyam Iru Veli was defined by luxurious accommodation that offered an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Ocean Residence with Pool
Our adventure began in an impressive overwater villa called the “Ocean Residence with Pool”. Set at the end of a long jetty, the villa offered breathtaking panoramic views across the turquoise sea. With its spacious, modern interior – and direct access to the sea from the terrace – the villa was a true paradise. The four days we spent here were, however, challenged by strong winds, which limited our opportunities for snorkelling – a minor drawback in an otherwise flawless stay.

Family Beach Villa with Pool
After four days we changed villas and moved into a “Family Beach Villa with Pool”, set right on the beach. This villa was ideal for the family, especially with small children, who loved the shallow lagoon directly in front of it. The beach here was without doubt the most beautiful we have experienced in the Maldives, with chalk-white sand and azure water that sparkled more beautifully than any photograph could capture. A couple of minutes’ walk took us to the other side of the island, where the water quickly becomes deeper – perfect for a swim in truly impressive surroundings.

The all-inclusive experience

Our all-inclusive package meant we could enjoy a wide selection of food, wines, soft drinks and cocktails, making our stay even more carefree and enjoyable. A few dishes carried a small supplement, but these were very limited – a genuinely generous all-inclusive menu.

The villa was restocked daily with plenty of soft drinks, beer, wine and water – as well as chocolate bars and a few crisps.

Communication via WhatsApp

Using WhatsApp to communicate with our host was incredibly efficient. It made it easy to book activities, restaurants and much more.

The restaurants

Sun Siyam Iru Veli offers a good selection of restaurants, all of which delivered excellent service and culinary experiences:

  • Fresh Water: An adults-only pool bar, which we didn’t use but which looked very inviting.
  • Aqua Orange: A buffet restaurant with a wide selection and a small, popular ice cream bar that was a hit with the children.
  • Roma: Quickly became our favourite, with its beautiful setting and a broad range of Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
  • Grouper Grill: Offered a unique experience with fish caught straight from a pond, plus the chance to dine under the stars on the beach.
  • Chemistry Bar: A lively bar with a wide range of drinks, entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for adults and children alike.

Fresh Water: Although we didn’t eat here, given its concept as an adults-only pool bar, it was clear that Fresh Water offered an exclusive atmosphere with a menu of signature cocktails, freshly pressed juices and light snacks. The large pool and elegant setting made it an appealing spot for adults looking for a break from family life.

Aqua Orange: This buffet restaurant quickly became one of our favourite places for lunch. With a wide selection of dishes from around the world and a dedicated ice cream bar that was a hit with the children, Aqua Orange offered something for every taste. The restaurant’s setting by the lagoon and the option of eating out on the beach made every meal a special experience.

Roma: Roma won our hearts as the favourite restaurant at the resort. Set out on a jetty, with beautiful tables and chairs, it offered an intimate atmosphere with views across the water. The menu featured a broad selection of Mediterranean dishes, from a classic Caesar salad to homemade pasta, and every dish was a delight for the palate.

Grouper Grill: This was another highlight, with its setting right on the beach, where we could enjoy freshly caught fish and seafood while the children played in the sand. A special experience was the “fish from the pond”, where a fish was caught to order and cooked to perfection. Although lunch here was slightly disappointing, the dinners under the stars more than made up for it.
