Atmosphere and setting
Strandgade 73 sits in central Helsingør, in the charming old quarter – and the place fits in there so naturally. The mood was calm and casual, but the interior is really striking: old wooden beams and half-timbering, terrazzo tables flecked with green glass, a bar counter with an olive tree and wine bottles, and wine racks along the walls. There is also a little wine shop attached, with wooden shelves full of bottles and a chalkboard listing the wine pairing.
And then there is the cellar room – wow. A round terrazzo table, brown chairs, fieldstone walls and the cosiest atmosphere imaginable. If you are a larger group, that is where you want to be sitting.
What we ate
We were there for lunch and ordered the Tapas Royale at 590 kr. per person. It arrived as a tapas board with 5 small servings – followed by a sharing plate with the most delicious sardines in olive oil and a cheese with accompaniments.
We also ordered Ekstra brød (extra bread) at 35 kr., because there was lovely oil and butter to go with it – and of course another basket of bread soon disappears. Plus a Danskvand (sparkling water) at 35 kr.
The wine pairing
We both went for the Vinmenu 7 glas (7-glass wine pairing) at 430 kr. per person – and it was genuinely delicious. The wines come from their own château, which adds a little extra charm to the whole thing. The pacing worked well – the wines came in 2 servings in step with the food, a glass for each course. By the end there was a small forest of glasses on the table – both white and red :)
Service
The service was really good and knowledgeable. You can tell they know their wine, and everything flowed without any waiting – both the board and the three servings of wine arrived exactly when they should.
Price and value
The bill came to 1,520 kr. for the two of us, so 760 kr. per person – and more than half of that was the wine pairing. Was it worth the money? Yes, absolutely. The only small reservation is that there could be a few more à la carte dishes – but the menu was fantastic, so it is well worth a visit.
Strandgade 73 is without doubt one of the best places in Helsingør – and one of those lunches we will be talking about for a long time. We will be back, no question, and next time we want to try their dinner. Highly recommended from us.
