Restaurant Kaj in Helsingør – smørrebrød with a gourmet touch and the harbour right outside

Restaurant Kaj – what a lovely place for lunch. The marina is right outside, the surroundings are beautiful, and the classic smørrebrød (open-faced rye bread sandwiches) get a little twist that lifts them a good way above what you get at many other places in town.

The place

Restaurant Kaj sits on Helsingør Lystbådehavn, the marina about 1 km from the town centre, with views over the boats and the Øresund. It has changed hands several times over the years, but our most recent visits have been really good, so happily things have moved in the right direction. You can sit on the terrace in fine weather or inside in warm, handsome and stylish surroundings, and there is a lovely harbour atmosphere wherever you end up.

We have been here many times by now, and honestly it is a place we keep coming back to because it simply works. It is often very busy, which says something about the place.

The food

We come here mainly for the smørrebrød, and over the years we have had the fish fillet, roast beef, prawns and herring, among others. This is smørrebrød where the classic servings get a little twist, and it is always beautifully plated. Quite simply, all of it is delicious.

This Saturday it was roast beef with crispy fried onions and fish fillet with remoulade (the Danish sweet-pickled kind) on the table. Both on home-baked Danish rye bread (rugbrød), and my, they taste good. Jes had their moules frites, a pot of steamed mussels with lemon, chips and two dips on the side. He absolutely loved them, so he can clearly recommend those.

Service

Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait for service, and we experienced that this time too. But then you just have an extra glass of wine and gaze out at the harbour in the meantime ;-) It doesn't spoil the experience, but it is worth knowing if you are in a hurry.

Price

We ended up at around 1000 kr. in total, so price-wise Kaj is at the higher end – but it is the wine that pushes the bill up.
On the other hand, the quality really cannot be compared with the simpler smørrebrød spots and pub-style places in town, so for us it is worth the money when we want a proper lunch.

Children and booking

It is also a good place to bring children. There is a children's menu with chicken and chips among other things, so the girls are not forgotten. And a warm recommendation from us: book a table. We have often found it very busy, and we would hate for you to make the trip for nothing.

Our recommendation

Superb location, lovely harbour atmosphere and really good food. Restaurant Kaj is without doubt one of the best places in Helsingør, and we will certainly be back, with the girls too. If you have been, do tell us what you had on your plate.

Tip: Book a table well in advance, as it is often very busy. And try their moules frites, which Jes can clearly recommend.
