Big Mac fries. The most gloriously messy comfort dish: fries piled high with all the good things from a classic Big Mac burger.
I made this batch when I had plenty of leftovers from my Big Mac wraps – find the recipe here. And goodness, it turned out well.
I’d recommend buying a block of cheddar and grating it yourself for topping your Big Mac fries – it’s far better than the ready-grated kind. *Otherwise, see the note in the recipe about using ready-grated cheddar.
This is proper comfort food – perfect for a weeknight or a lazy Sunday.
Big Mac Fries
Ingredients
- 1 kg oven fries
- 180 g cheddar, grated
- 1 batch Big Mac dressing – click here for the recipe
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 gherkins, finely chopped
- Little Gem, romaine or iceberg lettuce, shredded
Big Mac beef
- 500 g minced beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 green pepper, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, cut into very small dice
- 2 1/2 tsp paprika
- 3/4 tsp garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper
- Oil
Method
- Put the fries in the oven and cook them according to the instructions on the bag.*Meanwhile, get your Big Mac dressing ready too.
- Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for a couple of minutes.
- Add the mince and brown it well, then add the carrot, green pepper and spices and season to taste with salt and pepper.*The meat doesn’t need long, so cook it when there are about 15-20 minutes left of the cooking time for the fries – that way it is hot and ready at the same time.
- Season the fries with salt and spread half of them over a large plate or shallow bowl.
- Top with grated cheddar, half the meat and a little lettuce. Then add the remaining fries on top, top with grated cheddar and meat, and scatter a little lettuce, finely chopped onion, gherkins and Big Mac dressing over the top. Serve the rest of the dressing on the side, along with extra lettuce if you like.*It is important that both the fries and the meat are hot when the dish is assembled, otherwise the cheese won’t melt. *If you buy ready-grated cheddar, it usually needs a little more heat to melt – so in that case I’d recommend assembling the cooked fries, meat and cheddar and giving it a quick blast in the oven. Then top with lettuce, onion, gherkins and dressing.
