Juicy, flavourful Danish fish cakes (fiskefrikadeller) with an authentic taste that takes your taste buds on a trip to Asia.
Asian-style fish cakes are easy to make, either from fresh ready-made fish mince or by blending the fish yourself. A combination of, say, cod and salmon makes wonderfully tasty fish cakes.
Ginger, lime, chilli and garlic give the fish cakes a lovely flavour with an unmistakably Asian touch.
Whether you prefer them with fried noodles, steamed rice, an Asian salad or something similar, these flavourful fish cakes are an easy and delicious way to serve fish.
The Asian touch suits the fish cakes well – a lovely twist on classic Danish fish cakes.
You’ll find my recipe for Asian-style fish cakes below.
Asian-style fish cakes (fiskefrikadeller)
Ingredients
- 900 g fresh fish mince (fiskefars) – or raw fish
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 cloves garlic, grated or crushed
- 1 handful parsley, finely chopped
- 1/2 fresh chilli, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated
- 1 lime, juice and finely grated zest
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp plain flour
- 100-200 ml milk
- Salt and pepper
- Butter and oil
Method
- Mix the fish mince with the onion, parsley, garlic, ginger, chilli, lime zest and juice, eggs, flour, salt and plenty of freshly ground pepper. It is important to check that the mince is plain fresh fish mince, with no other ingredients already added. If you are using fresh fish, blend it to a smooth mince in a food processor and then follow the method above.
- Adjust the consistency of the mixture with milk. Add a little at a time and stir it well into the mince. The amount needed varies a great deal – 1 dl, 1 1/2 dl or 2 dl (100, 150 or 200 ml) – so add milk until the mixture is soft but still holds its shape. If you are using mince or fish that has been frozen, it can hold quite a lot of liquid – so take extra care here.
- Melt a generous knob of butter with a splash of oil in a frying pan.
- Shape the fish cakes with a spoon or by hand, or drop the mixture straight into the pan. Press them lightly flat with the back of a spoon and fry until golden on both sides. *See the video above the recipe if you like.
- Serve the fish cakes with rice, fried noodles, a crunchy fresh salad, an Asian-style cabbage slaw or similar.
