This is an experience well out of the ordinary. The restaurant is on board a boat – a boat that is beautifully, aesthetically furnished. Plenty of dark wood, a deep bluish carpet and soft, romantic lighting. White tablecloths frame the floor around the round tables, which are spaced generously from their neighbours, and every table has its own large window. You are guaranteed the best experience when the roughly 2½–3 hour cruise along the Seine begins. Don Juan II holds 1 Michelin star, and the chef, Frédéric Anton, takes you through a 5-course gastronomic experience.
The food was elegant and very simple – it tasted wonderful, and in such beautiful surroundings it was hard not to wear a big smile for the entire cruise.
We began the evening with a small appetiser – artichoke purée, avocado and crispy fried onion. Then came another appetiser – a kind of soup made with a Japanese vegetable. I simply cannot remember the name, but it was truly delicious.
And then the “real” menu got under way.
Crab with curry, dill cream and caviar
Scallop, cider sauce, nuts and chives
Langoustine, Parmesan sauce and “golden jelly”
Lamb, wild mushrooms and “jus gras”
Warm chocolate soufflé and pistachio ice cream
We had a lovely wine pairing alongside. It really is worth recommending, as they know exactly which wines go best with each dish.
Throughout dinner the boat glides along the Seine – there is constantly something new to look at. It was indescribably romantic – an utterly unique experience. The evening ended with the boat making a couple of slow turns in front of the Eiffel Tower. The clock had just struck 22.00, so the Eiffel Tower was sparkling with all its twinkling lights. It was so beautiful and completely magical.
If Michelin is not your thing, we saw PLENTY of other boats serving food on the Seine, with cruises while you dine. So there is every opportunity to enjoy this beautiful experience.
