Restaurant Melsted Badehotel

Five-course dinner magic and a sunset at Melsted Badehotel

We made the trip from Nordlandet to Melsted, where we had one of the most beautiful and flavourful evenings of the year. Here is the story of a dinner where everything came together – from lobster mayo to dulce de leche and a children’s dessert in a league of its own.

Dinner at Melsted Badehotel – a five-course menu with sea views and charm

It all began with the world’s friendliest taxi driver, Bjarne, who picked us up in Nordlandet. The drive to Melsted Badehotel became a little sightseeing tour in itself, full of his good stories about the island, about places worth exploring, and about the bakery in Rønne that reportedly makes the best cinnamon swirls on Bornholm.

We arrived at the beautiful white building with the classic logo on the gable. Everything spoke of summer, style and hospitality. Inside we were met by pale blue tones, soft furniture and a cosy sitting room that led us straight into the restaurant. An evening we won’t soon forget was waiting for us there.

Atmosphere and the view

The sun was casting its last rays over what must be one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Bornholm. The restaurant has large windows and a terrace where, weather permitting, you can eat outside with a front-row seat to the sea. It was a little too cool this evening, but the view and the light still went straight to our hearts.

Child-friendly at the highest level

Our girls, Alberte and Olivia, had pasta with meatballs – flavourful, homemade and prepared with the same care as the adults’ menu. But it was the dessert that stole the show: koldskål ice cream with six kinds of toppings – made from koldskål, the Danish cold buttermilk dessert soup, and served with everything from fresh berries and crumble to tiny meringues. It was a true dessert landscape and perhaps the most thoughtfully executed children’s dessert we have ever seen.

Service and atmosphere

The staff were kind, attentive and relaxed – a perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. The whole place radiated ease and a genuine love for what they do.

The end of the evening

We rounded off the evening with Bjarne picking us up again and driving us home to Nordlandet. An evening that ended in the same spirit as it began – friendly, calm and full of presence.

What we ate at Melsted Badehotel

The menu changes every single day. Food is only cooked for the number of guests who have booked in advance, which means zero food waste and freshness in every serving.

This evening we were served the following:

1st course: Crispy egg with lobster mayo and radishes – a small, crunchy explosion with silky mayo and perfectly judged salt from the sea.

2nd course: Cauliflower with wild garlic and crispy chicken skin – green, crisp and intense, with plenty of spring and forest floor in the flavour.

3rd course: Shore crab bisque with shellfish ravioli and smoked salmon – a deep, intense soup with perfectly balanced richness and smoke.

4th course: Fillet of beef from Himmerland with béarnaise, pickled onions and grilled asparagus – juicy, full of flavour and classic without being dull.

Dessert: Dulce de leche mousse with blueberries, cinnamon-swirl crunch (made from their own cinnamon swirls!) and warm brunsviger sauce – the buttery brown-sugar glaze from the classic Funen cake – a fireworks display of flavour and texture.

And then there were the wines. Among others, we drank a Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2022 and a Château Haut-Mayne 2021, both perfectly matched to the progression of the menu.
