A simple, creamy ranch dressing, perfect with all kinds of pitta and salads, or as a dip for vegetable sticks and crisps.
If you’ve been to the US, you’re 100% sure to have come across their wonderful ranch dressing. It has a mild herby flavour and yet real depth, – I’m a huge fan.
Depending on what I’m serving it with, or what I happen to have in, I like to vary the herbs. For salads, for example, I think it tastes wonderful with 1 tbsp of dill, – and with a steak a touch of tarragon or chervil is lovely. Just not too much, as they really come through.
But the recipe as written below is the way I most often make my ranch dressing.
Ranch dressing with buttermilk
Traditionally, ranch dressing usually contains buttermilk, – how much you add is very much a matter of taste. And yes, I do think a little buttermilk in my ranch dressing tastes great, – but more often than not I find it ends up on the thin side compared with how I like my ranch dressing.
That’s why I add lemon to give the dressing acidity, – but if you want buttermilk in your ranch dressing, don’t let me stop you. For salads in particular, where the dressing can happily be a little thinner, I think it works really well.
I’d recommend starting with 50 ml, stirring the dressing together and tasting it. Some types of crème fraîche are quite thin despite their 18% fat content, and then the dressing can, to my taste, simply become too thin.
