Stepping into Restaurant Alchemist in Copenhagen is more than simply going out for dinner; it is stepping into a world where the boundaries between food, art and science dissolve. I am not usually one for anything too elaborate, but I decided to give Alchemist a chance, and it is a decision I will never regret. It did not just exceed my expectations; it redefined my idea of what a dining experience can be.

From the moment you walk in, you are met by a visual show unfolding across the ceiling, a fascinating blend of theatre and gastronomy that accompanies the up to 50 impressions the menu promises. Alchemist manages to purify, mature and perfect not only the physical objects on the plate, but the whole experience of eating.

Dinner is a journey through Alchemist’s unique rooms, a journey that is not merely physical but sensory too. You are guided through a world in which every single element – from the smallest amuse-bouche to the most complex main course – is designed to challenge and expand your understanding of culinary art. Alchemist’s philosophy, set out in detail in its “Holistic Cuisine Manifesto”, speaks of creating experiences that engage all five senses as well as the intellect, drawing on elements of theatre, art, science and technology.

It is not just the food that takes centre stage here; it is the whole experience – one that can last between 4 and 6 hours and calls for curiosity and presence. Alchemist is not the place for a business dinner or a nervous first date; it is a place for reflection and openness to new ideas.

Booking a table at Alchemist is an experience in itself, as you buy “tickets” released for set periods, which adds a sense of exclusivity and anticipation to the whole occasion. The wait is well worth it, because what you experience is nothing short of enchanting.

As Ferran Adrià notes in the Holistic Cuisine Manifesto, Alchemist tests the limits of human creativity and endurance, and it is not a place you visit to socialise; it is a place where you reflect on our limitations as human beings – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Alchemist is a mind-blowing experience that leaves you both full and inspired, and it is not hard to see why it is counted among the best restaurants in the world. What an experience!
