Instructions
Heat a little oil in a saucepan and sauté the onion, garlic, carrot and celery over a medium heat for a couple of minutes.
Add the minced beef and brown it well. Season with salt and pepper.
Add the dried herbs and tomato purée and cook for a couple of minutes, then pour in the chopped tomatoes and the stock. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 30 minutes. If you have the time, the meat sauce can happily simmer for 1 hour or more. In that case, just add a little of the cooking water from the gnocchi before assembling the dish. The meat sauce should be soft in consistency - not too dry and not too wet.Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Cook the gnocchi according to the packet instructions and drain well.
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce over the base of an ovenproof dish, an ovenproof frying pan or similar. Then layer the gnocchi, cheeses and meat sauce in 2-3 layers.
Bake in a preheated conventional oven (top and bottom heat) at 225°C for about 15 minutes.
Leave the dish to rest for 5-8 minutes before serving. Top with fresh basil, parsley or similar and a little freshly ground pepper.
